This is quite a simple 148 bpm track with wubby acid lines and an old-school house piano style riff. Definitely channelling 90s vibes with this one. I think I will do some more.

One thing I decided to do, was to make the piano fairly dry reverb wise and have a very short decay. I like the effect – in stark contrast to my trance pianos with vast reverb tails.

Wood of Thorns and Roses is my main Christmas Trance release for 2025. Based on the traditional German carol, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging. This was suggested by YouTuber Leo Brennauer when I was asking for ideas for unusual Christmas carols earlier this year. It is not a “cheery” carol as such and my version is perhaps a bit more dramatic than festive but I loved the melody, unusual length, and the idea of using a tune I had never heard of.

Following something of a music production drought at the start of the year, Sugar Free is my first release of 2025. It is a light sort-of-trance track with strong early 2000s vibes. More music is on the way!

My plan to release 3 Christmas trance/EDM tracks in 2024 fell by the wayside, but I did manage to get one out GKW, or Good King Wenceslas. The track released on the 20th December, far from the first week in December as planned. This seems to have become something of a Christmas tradition with each festive track over the last 3 years managing to be squeezed in just before Xmas around the 19th or 20th. Oh why is November and December always so busy or full of ailments? Maybe 2025 will show better time management in the latter months… maybe.

It was quite a rushed release in the end, whilst feeling unwell with an infection, so it is not perfect but I hope it is still enjoyable to listen to and can bring some festive vibes throughout the year. My “Rest Ye Merry Gentle Folk” is probably my most popular track all year round, so there is an audience for these popular tunes no matter the season.

Blue on Yellow is an important release for me. It is part of my musical direction towards what I like to call “Story Trance” or “Journey Trance”. The track structure doesn’t really conform to that usually seen in trance tracks. Instead, I imagine a tale unfolding in a cinematic way the music forms the soundtrack for the events that take place in my fictitious story. This can lead to long “breaks” for dramatic or emotional moments, the introduction of curious background noises, fake builds, and so on. It would be amazing to have either the skills or the funds to create a (music) video to portray the story. As I have neither, I hope that the music can transport you on a journey or guide your imagination towards a narrative that you can create to accompany what you hear.

On a most basic level, the track has three distinct “tones”, and might be considered fairly literal interpretations. The piano represents the love and peace of “home”. This contrasts with the dance-beat sections, suggesting the more frenetic aspects of life that makes one long for tranquility and calm. A central minor-key section (the “green” section in the vocal mix) is in place. This is a metaphor for the anguish and drama currently be experienced. However, I didn’t want this to be the main feeling. The point of the track is the longing to be home and for that home to be the safe and calm space that it should be.

The end of the track moves into the relative major, hopefully instilling a feeling of optimism and joy.

Spoken Word /Vocal Mix

The track is being released in two versions: an instrumental only and one with some spoken words. The spoken word version talks about blue and yellow being favourite colours (but they are best when they are together), but also about the blue sky and wheat (that the Ukrainian flag is oft said to represent) being a symbol and reminder of home. In a rather incongruous turn to the original intent and narrative, for the minor section that was about some trauma I turned into a sort of joke. It is in defiance and in contrast to the musical change. “Thinking about it, maybe my favourite colour is green”, playing on that blue AND yellow make green. Light hearted in the face of adversity. This all might sound a little bit pompous but I do think about these things.

Donating

My plan is to donate my “artist’s share” of any sales of Blue on Yellow to a Ukrainian focused charity. My chosen cause is The Voices of Children Foundation which supports the many thousands of children who have been affected by the invasion and ongoing war.

I appreciate that, in these days of streaming, track sales are fairly rare, but every little will help these most innocent of victims, many of whom simply long for home. This, after all, is the main theme of the track.

The Artist’s Brush was my first trance composition of 2024 and was meant to be a fairly chilled and relaxing track, as part of my “Trance to Accompany Life” series. It features another one of my long breaks, this time a single break of around 3 minutes.

The break represents an artist’s (possibly imaginary) journey along a remote river amidst a, mostly tranquil, forested ‘hillscape’. Their art representing the peace and the joy found in their own creation of nature. The dance elements hopefully portray the joy and excitement found on the journey.

As an interesting aside, this is the first of my tracks on the Twinspin label to actually feature their logo in the artwork as well as my own JOMAЯKHO branding. This is the word JOMARKHO with the reversed “R” symbol, a Cyrillic capital letter ya. It has no actual meaning. Someone messaged me to ask if it did. It doesn’t, I use it simply because I like it. Not all font sets have it, so there is an occasional issue there.

I also included the TS logo on my own banner artwork for the first time.

The four track collection features a collection of tracks based around the same melodic and harmonic themes, each giving a different take and style. I am very proud of the collection presented here. I want this to be a musical journey rather than a dance-fest.

Nowhere (Original Mix)

This 7m30s track features a low intensity, atmospheric intro and long breaks. In fact I think the intro and breaks make up more than half the track. The drums don’t really come in until 2m20s. This is certainly a track to listen to whilst lying back. It is about the journey it takes you on rather than a dance fest.

Nowhere (Kixks In Mix)

As the name suggests we get going with the kicks in only 10 seconds here. This track still has a long middle break, again almost half the track, bookended by kick and drum sections. It also introduces a new distorted lead synth. I like to think of the sound as portraying a creature on the journey, initially menacing but then curious and supportive.

Nowhere (Techno Mix)

Here we go, this version is for the dancers and jump-up-and-downers. This version is faster and has a different kick-drum section eitherside of the (still long) break. The break is different to the previous versions, hopefully, keeping in with the techno vibe.

Nowhere Theme (Orchestral)

Track 4 of the Nowhere EP is something very different. I wanted to try my hand at creating a cinematic orchestration, or interpretation, of the journey taken by the hero or heroine in my imagined story behind Nowhere. I am by no means trained or experienced in writing a musical score so this was an interesting journey for me also. As this is something very different, and quieter, than the previous tracks (especially the techno mix) the Nowhere Theme begins with a few seconds of silence. This is a risk in the days of short attention spans and streaming but the silence is part of the composition to accompany my visualisation of the story being told.
