This week, in my VST Mess About series, I take a look at Virt Vereor from Noise Engineering. It is a free VST for 64 bit (only) Mac and Windows systems. It seems to have three sound generation modes: Bass, Sawx, and Harm and has, to date, the craziest preset naming “scheme” I have ever seen. I mention it rather a lot in my video.

Virt Vereor VST Synth Screenshot

I only lightly scratched the surface of the presets on this synth as there is an incredible amount of them. Virt Vereor offers a mixture of interesting but not obviously useful presets, sounds interesting and possibly useful for soundscapes, presets not really useful for me at all, and perfectly useful and nice sounds too. It is a strange beast, whose presentation is one seemingly not designed to be an instant grab for most musicians. I need to spend more time with it but it certainly seems to have a strong bias towards making cool and interesting sounds rather than particularly musical ones, although it seems perfectly capable of doing so.

You may think I did it something of an injustice by testing the last bank/folder of presets available, missing out on the first couple of banks of corker leads, pads and stabs for EDM. Feeling a little bad, I have since had a quick check at the first folder of patches and it is seemingly more of the same.

As someone who makes computer game soundtracks, “board game night” atmospheres, and similar soundscapes, I think that Virt Vereor will find a home in my VST armoury for this type of production. For EDM, not so much.

Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think in the youTube comments.

Virt Vereor is now available as a bundle of free plugins from the Noise Engineering website. Check it out for yourself.

Taking a look at the small, free, 32bit legacy plugin “VBox-3” from Krakli Plugins. In FL Studio the 32 bit, Windows only, plugin is automatically bridged to the 64 bit software. Whilst running through the VBox-3 presets, there were some issues with FL drawing the plugin which effectively disabled access to some controls. There have been some known issues with certain versions of FL Studio so hard to know whether this was down to the plugin itself, the bridging process, or just FL being odd. Either way, closing and reopening the plugin window fixed the problem.

There were some interesting sounds that could form useful pad layer elements as well as a couple of things that sounded a bit like cows, but maybe that’s just me. The modulation section looks a little daunting but seems quite versatile judging by the bend or portamento effects I could hear, even when auto bend was turned right down. If I make a “first patch” video then I might find out how it works.

VST Mess About Series

Having run through the presets of the Essence Plus trance synthesiser, I thought i would attempt to make a sort of trance pluck patch from scratch. Queue lots of faffing. As a heads up, my PC was on the verge of crashing so any issues with the responsiveness of the VST controls should not be placed at the feet of the VST itself. I also apologise for lopping off the left part of the screen. Something odd happened during the video export.

In the first of my series of “VST Mess Abouts” I mess about with Essence Plus, a neat and free synthesiser by Ronan Fed. The developer website can be found here: https://ronanfed.rf.gd/ where you will also find other free plugins. I will be messing about with some of those again soon.

Based on the presets, Essence Plus positions itself in the “trance synthesiser” camp and the preset sounds, on the whole, not only provides suitable sounds and demonstrates a really usable arpeggiator/chord tool but ends up being rather inspiring. You know that a synth is going to be useful when you instantly enjoy playing with the sounds and want to start creating a track using them then and there.

You may also watch this video on youTube where the description has time-stamps for the different preset types (such as plucks, pads, etc).

After running through the presets I decided to try making a patch of my own. See Essence Plus – Part 2.
